Whats on your mind?

Mysterious frost-landscape
The weather these days creates mysterious landscapes, and what  ever your mind is filled with, this has a great influence of, how good or bad this mysterie is.

Frosty Christmas-days

frost
walking
Despite the frost today, many families have been outside, walking an hour or two as a welcom break between the many Christmas-lunches and dinners.

December 24

christmas-tree

I wish a Merry Christmas to all of you who celebrate this day, and I thank everyone who have been reading and commenting my writting about the preparations.
Christmas eve in Denmark are celebrated very similar to what Michaela from Texas tells in this post, about her German childhood.

Busy day! I almost was too late to write this post before midnight. We are  preparing the food for tomorrow, the gifts, the nice clothes…this evening is called “lille juleaften”  (Little Christmas eve), some families and some friends meet to have a nice dinner or just a cosy evening together.

December 22

The count down candle with the 24 numbers,-[I wrote about it December 01]-, and the Christmas calender with or without chocolate, are both useful as time schedule for impatient children. But we have another very effective count down; the Danish television Christmas calender. Since 1960 and every year ever since, Danish television have produced a Christmas story in 24 parts, one for every day in December until Christmas. The story always includes nisser – of course :-)

The story this year is called Nissernes ø ( Nissers island):
As the Danes in 1917 sold the Danish West Indies to the United States and went home, they forgot all their nisser. The nisser (at St. Croix) are having problems with the American Santa Claus, and they ask Nisser in Denmark for help.

After many years with TV Christmas calenders for children (that most parents watched too) we got one for grown ups too. This years calender was made in 1991, it is still very popular and we don´t mind seeing it again.

Nisser

I have told you about PEBERNØDDER, here is some of the other christmas bisquits - SMÅKAGER “(small cakes)” – from the top 10 christmas-bisquit-list. These bisquits are really connected with Christmas, they are even mentioned in many christmas songs.

Brune kager
Vanille kranse
Klejner

(More about this later)

christmas-shopping

All schools are closed now, and the students are having  hollidays until January 5. Many companies are closed in the same period. It seems like everyone went to Copenhagen today, to buy presents.

24.12 is Christmas. The families will meet and have dinner together, dance around the christmas tree, and give presents.

25.12 is called  “First christmas day, this is the day for christmas lunch with other parts of the  family, or with friends. Same plan for 26.12, wich is called second christmas day. Every shop is closed from 24.12 – 26.12.

On 27.12 wich this year is a saturday, everyone will hurry to town, to shop or change gifts that wasn´t the right size or maybe had the wrong color…

Then new years eve has to be planned. A very busy time!

christmas-trees for sale

This Christmas tree salesman really made a nice and cosy place for his market. He decorated his area with one of the oldest christmas symbols  (in the Northern countries) the “Chritmas billy goat”. (There is possibly a better name, but  not in the wordbook!) It is made out of straw.

More about the “Yule goat” at wikipedia.

The Danish word for Christmas is “jul”, and is pronounced “Yule”.

December 18

marcipan

Christmas is a busy time!  Now we have to make some traditional chokolates (christmas-candy) made out of marzipan, chokolate, and nougat. Take a look here to see some results.
